I came here and read the posts so I opened up the tray, blew really hard inside of the external DVD case... I contacted memorex the manufacture of my 2 dvd dual layer lightscribe burners and the dvd media i was trying to use and he sent me this: "Please run this tool If you can pick up a good used drive for $10 or so, you might try it just to make sure you are having a drive failure and not a PSU http://elanmonitors.com/power-calibration/pioneer-dvr-111d.html

Unit was replaced by Pioneer with later model. The first 112D I got seemed to work fine for about a week (only burned about 3 DL discs during that period but they worked). It was connected as a master to the Secondary IDE and was the only drive connected. I've a more complicated method of trying to fix the files but let's stick to the simple stuff first. However, given all the things you have installed, the PMA error might be due to a failing power supply.

Anyway the fix worked wonders. I tried changing the languages (bring English US to top of list in International, according to another forum), reset SMC controller, no dice. Burned without a hitch.
