Perhaps in some cases the HDMI solution could be easier and more stable (and just by the way: HDMI is possible with iMac as well as Macbook). I downloaded VLC and that seems to work fine but the Airplay is not working properly. System issue usually after upgrading os x to Lion or Mountain Lion. Have a fix?

I used to watch DVDs on my television when I had a separate DVD player (which I no longer have) I tried multiple DVDs and none of them worked. Open Disk Utility, located in the Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities folder. Click "Open Disc" button to movies from Blu-Ray disc or click "Open File" button to load video file from hard drive. But no sound is transmitted to Apple TV. Hope this helps some folks, I'm not super tech savvy but was pleased when I figured this out.
